E. Brooks Holifield

E. Brooks Holifield is the Charles Howard Candler of American Church History in the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. A Ph.D. graduate of Yale University, Holifield is the author of The Covenant Sealed: The Development of Puritan Sacramental Theology in Old and New England, 1570-1720 (Yale, 1974), The Gentlemen Theologians: American Theology and Southern Culture, 1795-1860 (Duke, 1978), A History of Pastoral Care in America: From Salvation to Self-Realization, 1570-1970 (Abingdon, 1983), Health and Medicine in the Methodist Tradition (Crossroad, 1986), and Era of Persuasion: American Thought and Culture 1521-1680 (Twayne, 1989). He has also published numerous articles and book reviews, and serves as a member of the editorial board of Religion and American Culture. He has been a research fellow for the National Endowment for the Humanities three times. He is a member of the advisory committee for the Material History of American Religion Project.
