Material History of American Religion Project

Old time religion

"Old time religion" print

To capture the essence of that "old time religion"--the one that's "good enough for me"--this artist didn't paint a worship service or a group of people. Instead he chose things-a Bible, a gospel songbook, a paper fan, and an offering bowl. For the artist, these material objects embodied the truest nature of evangelical Christianity.

The print was a wedding gift to Ann Clay Adams, a Presbyterian minister and director of admissions at Columbia Theological Seminary.
